The YMCA is an inclusive and welcoming organization for all. We believe that in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive, our spaces are welcoming and everyone has the opportunity to thrive at the Y.
Our facility currently provides a Men’s Locker Room, a Women’s Locker Room, and a Family/Universal Locker Room. Our Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms currently do not include private spaces for showering and/or dressing; however, our Family/Universal Locker Room does have private spaces for showering and/or dressing. The Board of Directors and Leadership Team are working on a long-term Locker Room Remodel and seeking funding to ensure the safety of all of our members.
Recent changes in Michigan law provide that locker room access cannot be restricted on the basis of sex assigned at birth, but rather must be open to individual selection based on gender identity or expression. All private, public, and religious facilities must comply.
Our Family Rest Room/Locker Room provides private changing rooms and showers for all who are concerned about potential exposure and lack of privacy, including people with young children. With the lack of private changing areas and showers in either the Men’s or Women’s Locker Rooms, the YMCA feels use of the Family Rest Room/Locker Room is an adequate alternative until a time where we can provide private changing and shower facilities in all Locker Rooms. The use of our Family Rest Room/Locker Rooms for all, including transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, provides a location for all members to have a safe and secure changing and bathing facility.
The emotional well-being and protection of our children is our number one priority at our YMCA. We are committed to inclusiveness and our commitment to the safety of everyone in our multigenerational community facility. Respect is a core value of the YMCA, and we respectfully ask all users of our locker rooms and restrooms to exhibit modesty by covering themselves while in common spaces, where possible. Overall, when in the locker room, show discretion. Have modesty and courtesy for others.
All individuals using the YMCA facilities are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the character, welfare, best interests and policies of the YMCA. Failure to do so will result in immediate dismissal from the premises
SERVICE DOG POLICY
By upholding our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Caring, the Y is committed to strengthening our community through programs that promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Using our core values and the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) ADA as a guide, we have developed the following Service Animal Policy to ensure that all who enter our facilities enjoy a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment.
A service animal is any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a is ability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability, is allowed in our facility. Service dogs are permitted to accompany the handler to any place in the building or facility where members of the public, program participants, customers, or clients are allowed.
The YMCA may hold special events or programs that would allow for animals who are not designated service animals to be invited into our facilities. This is on a case by case basis and must be approved in advance.
